SustainHealth Recognises NAIDOC Week Through Learning, Reflection and Action
NAIDOC Week provided an important opportunity for the SustainHealth Recruitment team to come together for a week of learning, discussion and reflection on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, knowledge and communities.
As a healthcare recruitment agency working with rural, regional and remote communities across Australia, cultural understanding has particular relevance to our work. Our consultants support healthcare professionals who may work within Aboriginal communities, as well as healthcare organisations providing essential services in these locations.
This year, we wanted our NAIDOC Week recognition to create space for our team to learn together and consider how that learning can continue to shape the way we work.
A Week of Learning Across SustainHealth
Throughout NAIDOC Week, our team participated in a range of educational activities exploring First Nations knowledge, healthcare, leadership and cultural understanding.
The week began with a team morning tea and presentation, creating an opportunity to discuss the significance of NAIDOC Week and our own responsibility as an organisation working across diverse Australian communities.
Members of our team also participated in sessions exploring the stewardship of cultural knowledge and leadership informed by Aboriginal wisdom. These experiences were brought back to the wider SustainHealth team so that the learning could be shared and discussed collectively.
Turning Learning Into an Ongoing Commitment
Our NAIDOC Week activities were not intended to end when the week finished.
The team concluded the week with a reflection session, where everyone was encouraged to consider an action or commitment they could carry forward over the following 12 months.
For SustainHealth, this forms part of a wider commitment to diversity, inclusion, cultural safety and reconciliation. We recognise that meaningful progress requires continued listening, education and engagement rather than a single activity or annual event.
This also complements the cultural awareness education undertaken by members of our team who work closely with rural and remote healthcare professionals and Aboriginal communities.
Continuing the Journey
Since SustainHealth was established in 2017, rural, regional and remote healthcare has been an important part of our work. As we continue supporting these communities, we also recognise that there is always more to understand and learn.
Our NAIDOC Week recognition gave our team time to listen, share perspectives and consider how we can translate greater cultural understanding into the way we support healthcare professionals, clients and communities throughout the year.
