SustainHealth Recognise National Emergency Nurses Day
National Emergency Nurses Day, held every second Wednesday in October, is a chance to shine a spotlight on the fast-paced, high-stakes, and deeply human work of emergency nurses across Australia.
These nurses are often the first point of care for patients in critical condition, whether from trauma, illness, or sudden injury. They work in high-pressure environments like emergency departments (EDs), urgent care centres, trauma units, retrieval teams, and regional hospitals.
What Do Emergency Nurses Do?
Emergency nurses are highly trained to:
- Triage and assess patients upon arrival
- Stabilise critical conditions quickly and efficiently
- Manage acute injuries, illnesses, and emotional distress
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in life-saving procedures
- Support patients and families through some of the most difficult moments in their lives
They do all this with composure, expertise, and compassion—day or night, in metro hospitals or remote clinics, under immense emotional and physical pressure.
