SustainHealth’s Commitment to Aboriginal Cultural Awareness
SustainHealth Recruitment is committed to fostering cultural understanding within our team—particularly for those who recruit in rural and remote areas. One key initiative in this effort is our annual Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training by Walya (an Australian, Aboriginal-owned education provider dedicated to promoting understanding of First Nations history and issues). This training provides our team an opportunity to learn about the world’s oldest living culture, gaining insight into Aboriginal practices and Australia’s complex history and its ongoing impacts on First Nations communities. Through this annual awareness training, we can strengthen our ability to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthcare workers and the communities we serve.
Key Learnings from the Training
What will our team learn? Walya’s Cultural Awareness course covers a broad range of topics to build true cultural competency. Some of the key learnings include
-
- Insight into Aboriginal Culture’s Complexity: We can gain a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal society by exploring sophisticated kinship systems, community structures, cultural protocols, belief systems, and core values that underscore the richness of First Nations culture.
-
- Stories of Resilience and Innovation: The course shares important historical and contemporary narratives that illustrate Indigenous resilience and ingenuity. These stories can help our recruiters connect emotionally with the culture and appreciate the contributions of First Nations peoples.
-
- Historical Impact and Reconciliation: This training can help our team learn the importance of reconciliation efforts and the historical reasons behind health and employment gaps. By learning about policies such as assimilation, the Stolen Generations, and their aftermath, our staff can engage more sensitively and knowledgeably when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals.
Why This Training Matters:
-
- Certified by RACGP: The training is recognised by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and is widely respected across the healthcare sector for setting the standard in cultural education.
-
- Nationally Recognised: Walya is a leading provider of Aboriginal Cultural and Community Awareness training services across Australia.
-
- Supports Better Healthcare Outcomes: By equipping our team with cultural knowledge and context, we can better support healthcare professionals placed in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and other remote settings.
-
- Aligns With Our Commitment to Reconciliation: This initiative is part of our broader commitment to cultural competency and reconciliation, especially during National Reconciliation Week and throughout the year.
-
- Builds Deeper Connections: The training helps our consultants understand the diverse cultural backgrounds of the communities we serve, enabling more thoughtful recruitment and better relationships with healthcare providers and candidates alike.
